Difference between 500 and 550 TMT Bars

With the increasing demand for various types of high load infrastructures in India, choosing the right type of TMT bars became more critical. So today understanding the difference between grade Fe 500, Fe 550 and 600 TMT bars will help you choose the right type of TMT bars for your construction project that can tolerate the load of different natural calamities like floods, fires, earthquakes, and so on.

TMT bars are the main skeletons of any infrastructure and you cannot compromise with the quality of TMT bars. Poor quality TMT rebar doesn’t maintain the quality of material and might cause unrecoverable harm in your construction project.

“TMT” bars refer to “Thermo Mechanically Treated” bars and this type is the most popular type of bars in the globe. “Fe” refers to the “iron” used to manufacture these bars. The numbers “500” and “550” signifies the minimum yield stress in Megapascal (MPa).

In India, TMT steel bar manufacturers follow and maintain the guidelines of the “Bureau of Indian Standards” (BIS) as mentioned in the IS – 1786/2008. Bureau of Indian Standards controls the quality of the TMT bars manufacturing processes as well as the products.

Tufcon is a leading BIS-certified TMT steel bar manufacturing company. Tufcon produces the best quality TMT bars, billets, nails, and iron-binding wires following Indian standards as well as international standards. Contact Tufcon for more details.

As per IS – 1786/2008 guidelines of the Bureau of Indian Standards, the detailed difference between grade Fe 500 TMT bars and grade Fe 550 TMT bars are as follows –

Grade Fe 500 TMT Bars

Mechanical properties of Fe 500 TMT bars

  • Minimum proof stress – 500 Newton per mm square
  • Minimum tensile strength – 545 Newton per mm square
  • Minimum elongation – 12 %
  • Mandrel dia for bend test – up to 20 mm 4D and over 20 mm 5D

Chemical composition in percentage (%) of Fe 500 TMT bars –

  • Carbon – maximum 0.30
  • Sulfur – maximum 0.055
  • Phosphorus – maximum 0.055
  • S and P – maximum 0.105

GRADE Fe 550 TMT BARS

Mechanical properties of Fe 550 TMT bars

  • Minimum proof stress – 550 Newton per mm square
  • Minimum tensile stress – 585 Newton per mm square
  • Minimum elongation – 8 %
  • Mandrel dia for bend test – up to 20 mm 5D and over 20 mm 6D

Chemical composition in percentage (%) of Fe 550 TMT bars –

  • Carbon – maximum 0.30
  • Sulfur – maximum 0.055
  • Phosphorus – maximum 0.050
  • S and P –   maximum 0.100

Basic differences between Fe 500 TMT bars and Fe 550 TMT bars

These are the basic differences between Fe 500 TMT bars and Fe 550 TMT bars.

  • According to Indian standards, grade Fe 550 TMT bars are stronger than grade Fe 500 TMT bars.
  • Both Fe 500 TMT Rebars and Fe 550 TMT Rebars in several diameters like 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm, 20 mm, and so forth up to 36 mm.
  • Fe 500 TMT bars and Fe 550 TMT bars have great strength, reliable mildness, high corrosion resistance, and very good ductility.
  • These TMT bars are easy to work on the construction site and very cost-effective for all types of infrastructures.
  • Both Fe 500 and Fe 550 both TMT bars are excellent for Indian high load infrastructures like high rise residential and commercial construction, bridge construction, underground infrastructures, and many more.
